Trust and power as means of co-ordinating the internal relations of the organization : a conceptual framework

    Get PDF
Abstract This paper provides a conceptual framework for analysing trust and power in the internal relationships of the organization. It adopts a neo-institutionalist view focussing on the structural inventory and the social embeddedness of the organization in the process of developing trust between its individual members. It is suggested that, based on specific combinations of factors rooted in the internal social structure as well as the external socio-economic environment of the organization, two divergent trust/power control patterns emerge as ideal-typical forms of coordinating expectations and interaction among organizational actors.

Elastic Lennard-Jones Polymers Meet Clusters -- Differences and Similarities

We investigate solid-solid and solid-liquid transitions of elastic flexible off-lattice polymers with Lennard-Jones monomer-monomer interaction and anharmonic springs by means of sophisticated variants of multicanonical Monte Carlo methods. We find that the low-temperature behavior depends strongly and non-monotonically on the system size and exhibits broad similarities to unbound atomic clusters. Particular emphasis is dedicated to the classification of icosahedral and non-icosahedral low-energy polymer morphologies.Comment: 9 pages, 17 figure

Thermodynamics of polymer adsorption to a flexible membrane

We analyze the structural behavior of a single polymer chain grafted to an attractive, flexible surface. Our model is composed of a coarse-grained bead-and-spring polymer and a tethered membrane. By means of extensive parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations it is shown that the system exhibits a rich phase behavior ranging from highly ordered, compact to extended random coil structures and from desorbed to completely adsorbed or even partially embedded conformations. These findings are summarized in a pseudophase diagram indicating the predominant class of conformations as a function of the external parameters temperature and polymer-membrane interaction strength. By comparison with adsorption to a stiff membrane surface it is shown that the flexibility of the membrane gives rise to qualitatively new behavior such as stretching of adsorbed conformations

Just war and military morale: a brief reflection on the correlation between the legality of war and the moral repercussions for members of US and UK forces arising from the questionable legality of the campaign Iraqi Freedom of March 2003

Does it matter to a member of the military whether the military campaign in which he is taking part is lawful or not? Despite the observation that the crime of aggression (post Kampala 2010) constitutes a ‘leadership crime par excellence,’ which limits any (future) criminal responsibility accordingly, the legality or illegality of any military action under international law can create moral implications for the common foot soldier and mid-level officer and also have a tangible impact on the national legal frameworks under which these forces operate. This short article uses the example of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) to discuss the repercussions of a—most likely—illegal military campaign for individual members of democratic armed forces before the background of the present discussion of NATO led action in Libya

    Pollutant emissions from modern incinerators

    Get PDF
Presently, emissions of dioxins are mainly from incinerators, domestic and industrial coal combustion, and traffic. However, the major public concern and research effort are associated with the emissions of organic micropollutants from waste incinerators. Therefore, this paper attempts to give a brief overview on the more recent research and development for the removal of dioxins and heavy metals from flue gas streams. Special attention is devoted to the origin and control of emissions from incinerators. From the study presented it is possible to conclude that flue gas cleaning systems in modern incinerators are very reliable in removing almost all polluting emissions from flue gas streams, however the fly ash residues generated pose a significant disposal problem. In this way, the fly ash has to be managed carefully as it is enriched with heavy metals and organic micropollutants

    Get PDF
Blackbum Meadows wastewater treatment works is situated in Sheffield, the fourth largest city in England, in the county of South Yorkshire. This treatment plant has a fluidized bed incinerator in order to treat and dispose the sludge. This paper gives a brief overview of the various stages and processes involved in effluent treatment at Blackbum Meadows and assesses the sludge disposal operation

Das gesprochene Prager Deutsch in seiner letzten Phase

    Get PDF

Isoelectric focusing of grapevine peroxidases as a tool for ampelography

    Get PDF
Enzymatically active proteins have been isolated from the phloem of internodes of 71 Vitis species and cultivars and separated by thin layer electrofocusing. Peroxidases (EC 1.11.1.7.) yielded a pattern which could be differentiated into up to 8 bands within the pH range 6 through 11. The patterns obtained from different samples were congruent with ampelographic data, they are virtually identical within the families of Pinot and Silvaner, as weil as between haploid and diploid forms of one variety, even under different environmental conditions. American and Asian wild species and some interspecific hybrids show a slight shift of the isoelectric point of one enzyme band as compared to Vitis vinifera varieties
